I am looking forward to having your students back Monday! I look forward to the last couple months with your children! During April and May it is always hard to keep focused as parents, students and teachers alike are excited about summer! We will be taking the MAP test and doing end-of-the-year benchmarking. These tests show student progress from the beginning of first grade to the end. Please keep your student well rested and reading as we want to show their true abilities at the end of the year!

Welcome Back! I hope your family enjoyed the extra day off! This week we will be discussing President's Day and celebrating George Washington and Abe Lincoln! In math, we will be discussing finding 10 more and 10 less than a number. Our spelling words will focus on the "long i" sound with the "Magic E." I've provided a couple interesting tidbits below! Have a great week!

Today is an Early Release Day. Please keep in mind that on Early Release Days our schedule changes. We typically eat lunch around 10:30 am. This is a change from our normal time at 12:25 pm. If you would rather feed your child at home, please let me know. Otherwise, it is my job to make sure that students are fed before going home. It is not necessary to send a snack on these days either. Thanks for your understanding!

Happy Holidays!
I hope you are all enjoying the time spent with your families and the sun for a change! As many of you know that receive my emails, students were able to take home a book and homemade play-dough! I am providing the link to the play-dough recipe below. Keep in mind, although it is made with JELLO, it is not intended to be eaten. Enjoy!

This Friday, September 12th we will take our first spelling test. Spelling tests will continue each Friday, unless otherwise noted by the teacher.
Today your child should be bringing home their first trimester Report Card. Please keep in mind while reviewing the Report Card:
- First Grade is much more rigorous than Kindergarten. Do not be alarmed if you see several 1's and 2's on the report card, where maybe last year you saw 3's and 4's.
- Consider areas where there are 1's areas of "concern" that should be paid special attention to, 2's areas that your child is showing growth and potential but has not met the grade level standard YET, 3's are areas that your child is right on track or showing proficiency, and 4's (I do not give many 4's at this point) areas that they are performing above grade level.
- Several of the areas have not been taught or assessed at this point and are notated by an "x."
- The District targets have increased this year due to the Common Core State Standards, so the grade level targets are higher, meaning many students that were maybe proficient in kindergarten, have fallen into the "partially proficient" category.
- This week we took the MAP test on reading and math. We took the math test today and the students made tremendous growth in both categories, which we should celebrate! I will send home copies of the data when it is in the "system."
- Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact me!
